Bunbury Offshore Wind
FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is EDF power solutions Australia?
EDF power solutions Australia is part of the EDF Group, an energy company owned by the French Government. EDF Group is a global leader in renewable and low-carbon energy, with a strong focus on innovation and sustainability. EDF power solutions Australia develops, builds, owns and operates renewable and low-carbon power, as well as flexibility solutions and transmission assets.
What is the Bunbury Offshore Wind Project?
The Bunbury Offshore Wind Project is a proposed fixed-foundation offshore wind farm, located within the Indian Ocean, offshore Bunbury Declared Area. The project is proposed to provide up to 1.5 GW of renewable energy to the South West Interconnector System (SWIS) once in production. A seven-year feasibility licence was granted by the Federal Government in 2026.
What activities will be covered during the Feasibility Licence period?
The seven years covered by the feasibility licence stage is a phase where we gather information and conduct various studies, rather than actually build wind farms. During this time, different activities to determine the feasibility of the wind farm will be conducted, including collecting environmental and wind data, conducting detailed studies, engaging with stakeholders, and assessing the local supply chain and employment opportunities.
Construction of the wind farm, building turbines or laying cables does not occur during the feasibility licence period.
How far offshore will the turbines be located?
The turbines and offshore substation will be contained within the feasibility licence area which is 32 – 45 km from the closest shoreline. This means that turbines will be difficult to see from the shore in most weather conditions, due to the long distance and curvature of the earth.
How will the natural environment, flora and fauna be protected?
A core value of every EDFA project is to “Act with respect for the environment”. The Feasibility Licence provides time to build a detailed understanding of local biodiversity through comprehensive environmental assessments over several years and conducted by independent scientists. These studies contribute to establishing measures to safeguard biodiversity, protect ecosystems and support adaptation to climate change.
When is construction?
The project can only enter the construction stage once all the feasibility activities, including the necessary studies and approvals, have been successfully completed. At this stage, if all regulatory milestones are met, the construction phase is anticipated to commence around 2032.
Are you working with Traditional Owners?
Yes, we are committed to ongoing and meaningful engagement with Traditional Owners, including the Gnaala Karla Booja Aboriginal Corporation (GKBAC). We will also engage the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council, which is the Central Services Corporation under the South West Settlement, and other First Nations groups as appropriate.
How will the offshore windfarm benefit me and my community?
The project will bring investment and substantial medium and long-term economic benefits to the local region, including employment and contracting services. Once operational, the project is expected to generate approximately 200 ongoing jobs in the region.
Beyond economic benefits, the project will also deliver other important benefits around energy security, ensuring the South West continues to be an important contributor to Western Australia’s electricity generation. At the same time, it will contribute to cleaner air and reduce the impact of climate change by replacing high emission energy sources with cleaner alternatives. We are committed to being a positive contributor to the community.
Will stakeholders and community have a say?
Absolutely. We value the input of community members and have a strong track record of developing good long-term relationships with stakeholders of our renewable energy projects in Australia and overseas. This includes working harmoniously with fishing and tourism groups, and other marine users in offshore wind projects around the world.
